Summer Sprite
One of our cultivars this year is known as “Sprite” which is a hybrid strain with its lineage being Honey Popz X Pink Runtz. Though I am far from a cannabis breeder, I do know the name is a nod to the famous soda; the tasting notes hold both citrus and diesel. Cannabis cultivars’ names are innovative while remaining true to their ancestry, and the original seed and breeder. Though there are tweaks and new names given to illustrate the evolving continuity between the breeder, farmer, and the greater community, the strain itself can be traced quite a ways back. I encourage anyone interested in the history of cannabis to research the names given to the seeds and the strains that produce the incredible flowers enjoyed today. The past is always present in today and understanding where our flower (and us) has come from creates a different sort of intimacy with the plant and the people who produce it.

The names of cannabis cultivars have always intrigued me, but my curiosity resides more in the sprites of the celestial kind, though why my mind went there when I heard this particular name, I’m unsure. I think Craig was reading something in his 2025 Stella Natura Biodynamic Planting Calendar about the August meteor showers and we got to talking about celestial life and all things above us. These astronomical events that occur “out there” impact all of us beings “down here,” and while I was harvesting the Sprite it got me thinking of how the stars and moon and meteors (and sprites!) produce both a light and a frequency that though perhaps not always seen, is most definitely felt. It also got me thinking how this beautiful cannabis on our beautiful homestead just gets to be outside with all of heaven and earth influencing and supporting her, and how good it must feel to have such an enchanting home and how safe it must feel to be surrounded by so much love, attention, and connection.

I had believed that celestial sprites were the tail ends of a meteor that are visible in the night sky, but they are two very different atmospheric events. Celestial sprites are large-scale, short-lived electrical charges; a luminous electrical phenomena that appears as red flashes above thunderstorms. They are mysterious transient luminous events (TLE), connect weather and space, and are captured by sensitive, low light cameras.

There are also land sprites, magical beings that have been summoned from their own world by powerful wizardry. These too are a rare phenomenon as they embody the dual nature of elements and often serve as reminders to our personal spiritual paths. Living off the grid in the middle of a forest for over two decades has given me ample glimpses into realms above and below rarely seen or explored by people of these times. I do believe when the world was more in tune with nature and her rhythms, more people experienced the presence of beings not of our world; and realms and dimensions were more blurred, intertwined, and perhaps more accessible. Sprites, whether in space or in the gardens, have given our summer harvests lots to think about.

Our summer Sprite cultivar will be in the Solful stores this September 19, 2025 and she’s definitely heaven sent.
